5 Foods to Avoid During Orthodontic Treatment

5 Foods to Avoid During Braces Treatment
Posted on 06/20/2018

Patients improving their smile through orthodontic treatment with traditional braces can face challenges eating certain foods.   Your orthodontist will ask you to avoid some foods or change the way you’re eating some of your favorite snacks to ensure a great result. It’s also important to keep in mind that some foods are more likely to stick to your teeth, making oral hygiene a challenge. Here are five foods to stay away from while undergoing orthodontic treatment with braces.

1. Bagels

Because of the density of the dough and the chewiness of the final product, bagels can challenge patients with braces, leading to breakage and sticky food particles in the brackets. If you can't resist a morning bagel, make sure to pull pieces off, rather than taking bites.

2. Popcorn

At best, your popcorn is going to create an issue for your braces when it breaks up into small particles. If you make a batch that hasn't wholly popped, the hulls can damage your brackets. Overall, popcorn it is best to avoid while wearing braces. We can suggest alternatives to help curb cravings.‚Äč

3. Candies

Candy is hard to handle with braces no matter what you do. If it’s hard, it poses a risk for breakage. If it’s soft and chewy, it can stick to your braces and become a tooth decay hazard. If you can't resist a piece, enjoy one or two, just be sure not to bite down on hard candy!  Brushing immediately afterward is important.

4. Corn on the Cob

This can be a tough one in late summer when corn is best. Unfortunately, corn on the cob can be trouble for your braces. Treat yourself to cornbread or simply cut the corn off the cob. One option is to add other ingredients to your corn off the cob like parmesan cheese, or a small amount of sour cream or mayonnaise along with Cajun seasoning!

5. Apples and Other Hard Fruits/Vegetables

Similar to corn on the cob, firm greens and fruits can be hard on braces. Try cutting up your favorite fruits and vegetables rather than biting into them with front teeth. Also steaming vegetables or choosing softer alternatives is an option.

Foods Great for Braces Patients

During your orthodontic treatment, there are a couple of great foods you can rely on when you need a treat. Ice cream can take the place of candy, and soft fruits like peaches and tangerines will be an excellent replacement for the fresh stuff you are craving.  Our staff is always ready to offer ideas on alternative snacks during your treatment, just ask!
