Your retainer is what keeps you from losing all the hard work you put in straightening your teeth with Invisalign or braces—but in order for your retainer to be truly effective, you need to take care of it and keep it clean. Here at Henseler & Kocian Orthodontics, your local Woodbury and Stillwater braces providers, we want all of our patients to get the most out of their orthodontic treatment, so we have put together this quick guide on the best ways to clean your retainer!

Why Clean Your Retainer?

Your retainer is what holds your teeth in place after an orthodontic treatment like braces or Invisalign, making sure that your teeth don’t just shift back to where they were before. Retention helps do this when you wear your retainer, allowing your jaw bone and gums to set around your teeth in their new position. While wearing your retainer will help you keep your teeth straight, wearing a dirty retainer all night long will pose other threats to your mouth, including tooth decay, cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. Make sure you clean your teeth and your retainer after meals and before you go to sleep, so that you can have both straight and clean teeth when you’re done with your orthodontic treatment!

How To Clean Your Retainer

Whether you live in Stillwater or Woodbury, braces are easy and affordable at Henseler & Kocian Orthodontics—and we will make sure that your results last with retention! Part of the retention process is keeping your retainer clean, so here are our top retainer cleaning tips:

  • Use A Toothbrush But Not Toothpaste!
You can clean your retainer with a toothbrush and soap, but make sure to avoid toothpaste, which is often too rough for retainers
  • Warm Water, Not Hot
Clean your retainer with warm water, but never use hot water! Hot water can warp the plastic of your retainer, making it ineffective.
  • Retainer Cleaning Liquid:
Available at most drug stores, retainer cleaning liquid is an important part of cleaning your retainer. You should use it at least once a week to soak your retainer and get rid of any built up bacteria.
  • Always Clean Your Teeth Before Using Your Retainer:
Putting your retainer in after eating or before bed without cleaning your teeth can trap bacteria next to your teeth, where it can grow and cause decay. Make sure to brush and floss before putting your retainer back in after a meal!
