We will be discussing how to correct upper front teeth protrusion.

What is upper teeth protrusion?

Protruding teeth are a very common dental concern. Occurring in both children and adults, protruding teeth can be caused by:

  • Thumbsucking
  • Bottle feeding for an extended time
  • Overcrowding
  • Misaligned bite
  • Tongue Thrusting
  • Genetics

Not only can protruding teeth cause people to be self-conscious, but they can also impact speech, and chewing and have a higher tendency to get damaged.

How to correct upper teeth protrusion at Henseler & Kocian Orthodontics

  • Braces: The most common technique for eliminating front teeth protrusion is through the use of braces. This could be traditional metal braces or clear aligners such as Invisalign or 3M Clarity Aligners. Braces will work by adjusting your teeth and pulling back the front teeth into a more proper position.
  • Expanders: A testament to early orthodontic treatment, if a problem is caught early enough - before the jaw and teeth are fully formed - a palatal expander can be used in a child to avoid further problems and more complex treatment.
  • Extraction: Another early intervention against protruding front teeth can be tooth extraction. If we find during a childhood evaluation that overcrowding is occurring, removing teeth can prevent further crowding, therefore protrusion.
  • Surgery: Sometimes the cause of protruding teeth is an issue with the jaw instead of within the teeth. In these more severe cases, corrective jaw surgery may become necessary.

The type of treatment depends on the severity of your particular issue, but Dr. Henseler and Dr. Kocian will work with you to determine what will work best for your case.
