Jaw surgery doesn’t sound particularly fun, but sometimes it’s a necessary part of life as a stepping stone to a happier, healthier, less painful life. If the doctors at Henseler & Kocian Orthodontics have recommended a corrective jaw surgery as part of your treatment plan, you can rest easy knowing that we are confident in the outcome. Along with scheduling you with a highly skilled maxillofacial surgeon, we will be there with you to assist you every step of the way.

What To Expect After Jaw Surgery

After your jaw surgery is complete, expect to experience some swelling and pain. These can both be controlled by medication, both over-the-counter and prescription. After leaving the hospital, there are ways you can help make your recovery easier and speedier.

Speeding Up Recovery After Jaw Surgery

Follow this advice for a speedier post-surgery recovery:

  • Liquify - You’re going to want to stick with a liquid diet at first. Prepare in advance by stocking up on protein shakes, packaged smoothies, broths, and fresh fruit and veggies you can puree to your heart’s desire. Once you start to segue into more solid foods, stay in the soft lane by transitioning into foods that don’t require chewing. Have you ever wished you could eat mashed potatoes multiple times a day guilt-free? Now is your chance!
  • Medicate - Take your medication as directed by your surgeon. There is no need to skip a dose if you are feeling pain. The medication will help with pain and swelling, and allow you to continue to rest more comfortably.
  • Ice - Using ice compresses is another way to provide both pain and swelling relief
  • Hydrate - Water is always good for you, but especially after a surgery that will restrict what you consume. Keeping up on your water intake will not only contribute to overall well-being, but it will also keep your lips from chapping and help ease constipation caused by pain pills.
  • Rest - Take it slow. On the first day or so post-surgery, plan a date with your favorite book or TV series. Allow your body time to rest and heal. Once you are more comfortable, ease into light activity to get back on your feet.
